Jeff Brown sent us this terrific Lost in Space article from the July 22-28 1967 edition of TV Guide.  It features a two-page spread of how the special effects crew made the Robot float in space during the filming of "Condemned of Space."

Jeff vividly remembers this article when it was originally published, and he's happy to  inform everyone at the LostinSpace List that his memory is still working properly!  The photo was spread over two pages, so Jeff combined them in PhotoShop and touched them up a bit.

The first image depicts the stunt Robot floating with the stunt John Robinson reaching for him.

The second image depicts the Robot floating with a stagehand working a small device to make his arms wave back and forth.

The third image shows four stagehands working various contraptions to move the Robot and stuntman around.

The complete two-page spread, combining all of the images and the accompanying text description (transcribed below.)

"TO MAKE A ROBOT FLY, YOU ... get some rope.
Hit Counter
During the upcoming season the Lost in Space robot will finally get off the ground.  Long accustomed to shuffling about, he will finally get his chance to become air - or space - borne.

As you'll notice at left (top), the robot and the gentleman seem to be floating, unsupported, in midspace.  However, both are held up by ropes and wires.

Below at left are the men who make the man and the robot 'fly'.  The men on the drums move the bodies horizontally across the 'sky'; the men on the ropes move them up and down.

Then, to make the robot 'act', the man at the far left manipulates the arms with that gadget that looks like a tin can.  A bit of effort is required, but look how long it took the world's scientists to send one man into space."

In Jeff's words, "this is a pretty cool
and rare set of behind the scenes shots."
We certainly agree with him! Thanks, Jeff!
