V-Pinnacles Image Comparison

A. This pinnacle has a peak and a "nub" that appears just to its right, visible in both images. Also, note the way that the face of the rock slopes down and to the left in both images.  Due to the irregular shape of this pinnacle, it appears wider in the left image.  In comparison, the image on the right shows the pinnacle from its thinnest angle.

B. Starting almost immediately below the V-shaped crest, there is a vertical depression in the rock which proceeds downwards and slightly to the left.

C. To the left and below the vertical depression (B), there is a flat face in both pinnacles that slopes gently outwards until it reaches the top of the pinnacles' lower base.

The V-shaped crest is much sharper in the right image for two reasons:

  • the camera angle on the left faces the notch directly, while the Lost in Space camera angle was further to the right, making the width of the notch appear narrower.

  • significant erosion has taken place here in the last year!  For more information, see Fred's description of the 1999 storm that whipped through the Trona Pinnacles area.
