On October 16, 1997, Judy and Penny
Robinson
set off with their family in search of Alpha Centauri. Like her brother Will, Penny regarded this as an
adventure; grinning like jack olanterns, she and Will entered the Jupiter 2 with
excitement, looking forward to traveling in space. In contrast, Judy made a difficult
decision and gave up her promising career in musical comedy to join her family on the
colonization effort. If Major Don Westwhom she had started dating right before the
Jupiter 2 launchhad not joined the mission as the J2s pilot, who knows what
Judys decision would have been? In any event, up in space, Judy mainly helps her
mother Maureen with the various domestic chores; she dons a gun belt and an authoritative
attitude only when John Robinson and Don West have left the J2 campsite in the Chariot,
putting Maureen in charge (for example, see the first season episode "One
of Our Dogs Is Missing").

Judy spends most of her time doing domestic work. Like her mother, she offers great compassion to those in trouble. She usually is the last person in the Robinson party to condemn Dr. Smith; in fact, she often speaks up for Dr. Smith, giving him the benefit of the doubt. |
|
Penny spends most of her time studying with Will (homeschooling, Jupiter 2-style!), playing with Debbie (her alien monkey friend), or going on adventures with Will, Dr. Smith, and the Robot. Penny is known for her purity of spirit and her great sense of optimism. In several episodes, Penny meets different alien male playmates: "Boy" from the first season episode "The Magic Mirror"; J-5 from the third season episode "The Haunted Lighthouse"; and Oggo from the third season episode "A Day at the Zoo."

Sisters together, through thick and thin.
Penny turns away from Judy, upset. Judy apologizes to Penny, but says, "I wish you'd fix yourself up once in a while . . . you could be so beautiful." Penny wonders, "why's all that goop so important, anyway?" She likes the way she is, and maybe she'll stay this way forever. |
